Nat Sherman was an address before it was a brand. Nathan Sherman opened a tobacco shop in New York in 1930; his successors installed the house on Fifth Avenue, in a three-storey building with smoking lounges, which became for decades the gathering point of Manhattan's cigar smokers.
The cigars themselves were never rolled in New York: the house had its ranges composed in the Dominican Republic and in Nicaragua, under its name and to its specifications. It is the model of the retailer turned brand, and it produced some of the most carefully made series on the American market — Timeless, Metropolitan, Sterling.
The Fifth Avenue shop closed in 2020, and the brand was discontinued shortly after by the group that owned it. Part of the team relaunched the blends under another name, which rarely happens: as a rule, an abandoned brand disappears along with its recipes.
The atlas keeps it for what it stands for — an American house whose place mattered as much as its product, in a trade where almost everything happens elsewhere.
Range Depth
Timeless
The most carefully made series of the house: tightly built, peppery, with a length that explains the loyalty of its New York clientele.
Robusto · Toro
Metropolitan
The drawing-room register, in the image of the Fifth Avenue building where the house received: cedar, hazelnut, nothing that raises its voice.
Corona
🥃 Pairings
New York rye whiskey
The pairing of the city, and the spice of the rye stands up to the Timeless.
Black coffee
On the Metropolitan, a medium roast is quite enough.
