The Ashton story begins in Philadelphia, in 1985, in the Holt's Cigar Company shop, which the Levin family has kept since 1957 and which Robert Levin has run since 1974, says holts.com. The Dominican Republic, which had emerged in the 1970s as the primary alternative to Cuba for American smokers, was producing cigars of widely variable quality — some excellent, many merely adequate. It was Robert Levin who created the brand: the house calls him the creator of Ashton in the early 1980s and dates its launch to 1985; he says in a 1996 interview that he presented it at the Retail Tobacco Dealers of America convention, in Washington, and that in 1992 he bought from Bill Taylor, maker of Ashton pipes, the name suggested to him by a friend, an importer of those pipes.

The first Ashton cigars were not rolled at Fuente: Levin says they were first made by Henke Kelner at Tabadom, and that he then entrusted the brand to the Fuentes in 1988, working out the blend with Carlos Fuente Jr., Carlito; the house, for its part, writes that he teamed up with the Fuentes shortly after the launch. The relationship still holds: ashtoncigar.com and holts.com say that Ashton cigars are rolled at Tabacalera A. Fuente, in the Dominican Republic, and blended by Carlito Fuente — with the exception of the San Cristobal range, below. The arrangement also means that the two houses share a quality floor — whatever the Fuente family is willing to put its name to, it also produces for Levin's brand.

The catalogue that resulted covers the full range of Dominican expression. The classic Connecticut Shade ranges state the core proposition: refined, creamy, with a consistency of construction that few houses maintain. The VSG — Virgin Sun Grown — lines use an Ecuadorian sun-grown wrapper for a fuller character, which surprised smokers who knew Ashton only through its mild expressions. The Cabinet Selection, aged in Spanish cedar boxes after rolling, shows the house at its peak of refinement.

The brand's identity is Philadelphian in character — understated, quality-conscious, more interested in execution than in the theatre of the cigar world. Where Davidoff is Genevan and cold, Ashton is Philadelphian and warm. It does not make headlines with extreme formats or unexpected blends; it makes cigars that experienced enthusiasts return to without disappointment, which is harder than it sounds.

Outside the United States, Ashton's San Cristobal range, whose manufacture is entrusted in Nicaragua to the Garcia family of My Father, in Estelí, is sold under the name Paradiso: an article of December 2015 explains it for brand reasons. In October 2026, German retailers still offer it under that name, in the series Paradiso by Ashton, Revelation, Quintessence and Elegancia. Not to be confused with the Cuban brand San Cristóbal de La Habana.
