Almost every Nicaraguan factory is in Estelí, in the tobacco-growing north. Mombacho made the opposite choice and settled in Granada, the colonial city on the shore of Lake Nicaragua, at the foot of the volcano that gives it its name. That is no small point of geography: the house rolls where travellers pass, in an old mansion open to visitors, and has made that accessibility part of its argument.

The tobacco itself comes from the north like everyone else's — there is no tobacco terroir around Granada. What the house lays claim to lies elsewhere: short runs, a factory on a human scale, and a direct relationship between smoker and workshop, against the grain of a trade in which one almost never visits the place where the cigar was born.

It is, in this atlas, the clearest example of a house whose interest lies as much in the place as in the product.

What followed has to be written down. On 9 June 2023, Cameron Heaps, Mombacho's founder, and Jared Michaeli, Favilli's president, announced the permanent closure of the house and their retirement from the trade. Claudio Sgroi, president and master blender, had left in 2021; the mansion, bought in 2014, had been turned into a luxury hospitality venue, and the brand never found its market again.

This entry is therefore an archive entry. What it describes — the Granada workshop, the visits, the short runs — existed, and exists no longer.
