After the Revolution, the Menéndez family, who held H. Upmann in Havana, made for the Dominican Republic. A second H. Upmann was born there, with no ownership link to the Cuban one.
It is rolled at the Tabacalera de García in La Romana — founded in 1971 in the country's first free zone. More than two thousand people work there, for some forty million cigars a year, every one rolled by hand. The Dominican Montecristo, Romeo y Julieta, Don Diego and Henry Clay come from there too.
