The chogüí is a bird of the Dominican Republic, and the brand that bears its name is that of an enthusiast from the country, Víctor Nicolás, who wanted to make his own cigars. He met Francisco "Chico" Rivas at the end of 2013 and began visiting his small factory every month — Manufactura Rivas, which the house nicknamed the secret nest, after the bird. The tobaccos came from Leo Reyes, the Navarrete grower whose farm this atlas tells at the De Los Reyes entry. The Primera Edición came out in November 2014, reserved for Dominican retailers, at six thousand cigars.
This atlas classifies it here for what it is: a Dominican puro, tobaccos, factory and founder from the same country. That is rarer than one thinks in a country that mostly rolls for others.
In 2018, Nicolás left the trade quietly, and even his American distributor did not know what was becoming of the brand. It came back in February 2022, with a remade Dos77 — the original Dominican wrapper could not be found, replaced by a sun-grown Dominican corojo, with piloto mejorado in the filler — and distribution entrusted to Venture 1492, the company of Kyle Gellis, the founder of Warped, whose entry this atlas carries. A brand dormant then returned, as Mombacho was the other way round: the entry writes it in the present because the return is documented.
