Casa Cuevas is a factory's own brand, and the factory belongs to a family that has been planting for more than a hundred years.
Juan Cuevas, a Spaniard from Santander, left Spain in the middle of the nineteenth century and began growing tobacco in the province of Pinar del Río, in Cuba. The family that followed settled in the Dominican Republic, in the Cibao Valley, where it built Tabacalera Las Lavas.
Luis Cuevas Sr. runs it, joined by his son Luis Jr. In 2021 Luis Jr. and his own son Alec blended the Patrimonio range together and dedicated it to Luis Sr. — three generations on a single blend, which is a fairly direct way of saying what the word means.
The factory does not work for itself alone: it also makes for Gurkha, Sam Leccia and Veritas. It is the third Dominican factory this atlas names, alongside Tabacalera Palma and von Eicken — three addresses behind a good part of the Dominican catalogue.
