Caoba was born in 1992 in Santo Domingo, founded by Don Julio Pérez González, a Spaniard married to a Dominican woman who had until then run a mahogany-carving workshop — caoba in Spanish, and the country's national tree: the company says that is where it drew its name. The original factory was set up in Villa Faro, in the east of the capital; the following generation has since moved it to the colonial quarter of Santo Domingo (Ciudad Colonial), where it stands today (humoytabaco.com, in Spanish). Stogiepress describes a vertically integrated factory, with its own fields in Tamboril, in the Cibao valley.
The range comprises around ten lines according to Humo y Tabaco; two are described by the specialist press. Diamante, full-bodied according to Stogiepress, combines a Mexican San Andrés wrapper with an entirely Dominican binder and filler. Oro, conversely, carries an Ecuadorian Connecticut Shade wrapper over Dominican binder and filler, for a milder profile (Leaf Enthusiast). The brand was presented at the IPCPR 2019 (halfwheel) and remains on general sale.
