Caldwell Cigar Co. was born of a break. Robert Caldwell left Wynwood Cigars and returned to the trade in 2014, under his own name, at the IPCPR trade show.
He partnered with William and Henderson Ventura, at Tabacalera William Ventura in the Dominican Republic. It is another house without a factory — the model the Nicaraguan batch made visible — but with a particularity: Caldwell builds his blends around rare tobaccos and old vintages rather than around a repeatable recipe.
The launch collection held three blends, and their names answer one another: The King is Dead and Long Live the King. The third, Eastern Standard, was not planned — a particular Connecticut leaf was put into Caldwell's hands, the trial held, and the range entered the catalogue.
It is a way of working that explains the size of the house: what cannot be sourced twice cannot be made in quantity.
On 26 September 2022, a fire destroyed Tabacalera William Ventura; production resumed at satellite workshops and at El Maestro, and the new factory reopened in March 2024 under the same name. The factory has its own entry: Tabacalera William Ventura.
Range Depth
Long Live the King
One of the three launch ranges of 2014, and the one that lasted. The vitola names are deliberately oversized — the house plays on emphasis rather than restraint.
Petit Double Wide Short Churchill · Robusto
The King is Dead
The other half of the launch diptych. The two ranges read together and make sense only in relation to one another.
Premier Regalos
Eastern Standard
The range that was not planned. A particular Connecticut leaf was put into Caldwell's hands, the trial held, and it entered the catalogue.
Sungrown · Euro Cut
