The name Zino is the first name of Zino Davidoff himself. According to the brand's website (zino.oettingerdavidoff.com), in 1978, together with Dr Ernst Schneider, he launched a brand named after his first name; the first cigars were rolled in Honduras, at the time of the American embargo on Cuba, for an American market that no longer had access to Cuban tobacco.
Again according to the house, production then passed through several growing regions: the Dominican Republic, Honduras and Nicaragua.
The premium line Zino Platinum, with the Crown and Scepter series, was launched worldwide in 2003 (brand website). Cigar Coop describes it as aimed at the young market born of the boom of the 1990s. Its wrappers are Ecuadorian according to trade-press and retailer listings; the Z-Class (May 2011) combines, according to Cigar Coop, a Dominican wrapper, a Peruvian binder and a filler of Nicaraguan and Honduran ligeros. From 2013, a series of collector's editions with urban-art packaging (New York, Los Angeles, Texas) extended the line.
The Zino brand was relaunched in 2021 on a Nicaraguan blend. In October 2026 the house presents a new Honduras line, with tobacco from Jamastrán and Copán and a red band (the Nicaragua line carries a gold band); it writes that it is thus returning to where everything began in 1978. The wrapper of both lines comes from Ecuador.
