Habanos dates the brand to 1834; according to Wikipedia and a British retailer, the name was registered that year by Ignacio Larrañaga, a Spanish immigrant who had arrived in Havana in 1825. According to Wikipedia, the house moved into a larger factory on Carlos III Street in 1920; in 1925, machines from the United States provoked strikes and a boycott and were sent back; nationalisation came in 1960 and production then moved to La Corona; output fell in the 1980s and trademark disputes reduced exports in the 1990s.
Rudyard Kipling names the brand in the poem The Betrothed, alongside Henry Clay; the date of first publication diverges: 1886 in book form according to Wikipedia, 21 November 1888 in an Indian daily newspaper according to the Kipling Society. The poem weighs a fiancée against a cigar, and names several brands; the Kipling Society's notes recall that the Larrañaga brand was registered in 1834.
Habanos gives a light to medium strength and wrapper and filler from the Vuelta Abajo zone, in Pinar del Río. Wikipedia lists series reserved for particular markets: Lonsdale for Germany (2006), Magnifico for the United Kingdom (2007-2008), Valioso for Switzerland (2009), Opera for France (2015); a Swiss site also cites a Robusto Asia Pacifique from 2007.
Habanos presents Galanes (52 x 120 mm) as the brand's most recent vitola, put on sale in Switzerland in April 2021 according to the importer.
Where is it rolled? In Cuba the question has a two-storey answer. Since 2002 each Habanos brand has had a mother factory, responsible for leaf selection and blend, and its cigars may be rolled in any of the island's few dozen factories under the mother's supervision; Habanos does not publish that map, the trade press reconstructs it. Habanos names no factory. A trade-press report (2011) names La Corona (Miguel Fernández Roig), on avenida 20 de Mayo and Línea de Ferrocarril, in Cerro, as the mother factory of Por Larrañaga, as of Cuaba, Hoyo de Monterrey, Punch, San Cristóbal de La Habana and La Flor de Cano; Wikipedia places production at La Corona since 1960. In October 2026, habanos.com lists it among the thirteen other brands of a portfolio of twenty-seven, outside the six global ones, the five value brands and the three volume brands; the trade press already classed it in 2019 in the category of the others, out of twenty-one portfolio brands. The official page says it was founded in 1834 and is hand-rolled with long filler for some vitolas, short filler for others; the Galanes, cepo 52 by 120 mm, is its first vitola of heavy gauge. This atlas says so, as for every brand that mixes the two fillers.
