The Plasencia family has grown tobacco since 1865, says the house (plasenciacigars.com, October 2026), which counts five generations. According to the Cigars Direct blog (2020), it all begins with Eduardo Plasencia, who came from the Canary Islands to Vuelta Abajo, in Cuba.
Sources diverge on what follows. According to Cigars Direct (2020), the Cuban government seized the farm in 1963, Don Sixto went through Mexico and then Nicaragua, where he planted around 1965; Sandinista rebels burned his farms in 1978 and the family left for Honduras. According to the trade press, it was the Sandinista takeover of 1979 that seized the farms; Wikipedia speaks of the early 1980s. Néstor Plasencia took over the tobacco operations in 1986 (Cigars Direct); the Ocotal factory, in Nicaragua, opened in 1992 according to Wikipedia, in 1994 according to the trade press.
For a long time, the family was known above all as a grower and as a contract manufacturer. According to the trade press, it supplies leaf to Davidoff and makes cigars for Rocky Patel and Alec Bradley, among others; Wikipedia adds Swisher.
In 2016 the family created Plasencia 1865, a distribution company, and launched under its own name the Alma series, whose Alma Fuerte (strong soul) is the first cigar. According to Cigar Coop (2018), it is a Nicaraguan puro built on the Criollo '98, with tobaccos from Condega, Estelí, Jalapa and Ometepe. The Cosecha series, from Honduras, followed at the end of 2017 with the Cosecha 146.
In October 2026 the house declares that it owns farms in seven growing areas of Nicaragua and Honduras (Condega, Estelí, the Jalapa Valley and Ometepe; Jamastrán, Talanga and Azacualpa), covering over 4,900 acres.
According to cigarworld.de, Plasencia also rolls Astoria de Nicaragua, a brand sold in Germany. In October 2026, the retailer offers it with Tabac Benden GmbH (Düsseldorf) as importer and Tabacalera Plasencia, in Estelí, as manufacturer: hand-rolled, with a mediumfiller filler, made entirely of Nicaraguan tobacco. It has had it in its catalogue since 1 October 2010 for the Classic, since 23 April 2025 for the Crimez series (Hate, Kidnapping, Manslaughter), and has imported it directly since 2024, its former importer having ceased trading.
