The history of the Oliva family begins in Pinar del Río, Cuba: according to the house, Melanio Oliva first grew tobacco there in 1886, interrupted his crops for the Cuban war of independence, then resumed them. His son Facundo, says the house, took over in the early 1920s (Wikipedia names Hipolito).
When Cuba changed regime, the grandson Gilberto Oliva moved from growing to tobacco brokerage. According to the house, he left the island in the early 1960s and looked in Honduras, Panama, Mexico and the Philippines for conditions close to the Cuban taste, before settling in Nicaragua. The dates differ: Wikipedia has him leave for Spain in 1964, grow in Nicaragua in 1969, then leave the country in 1979 and return in 1995.
For years the family was grower and broker, with no brand in its own name. His son José says that Gilberto senior grew tobacco every year and put it aside (trade press, December 2017). No page read names the manufacturers who bought.
In 1995, Gilberto Oliva and his son Gilberto Jr. made a cigar in the factory of Néstor Plasencia senior, in Honduras, which they named Gilberto Oliva; a year later they opened their own factory in Nicaragua and shortened the name to Oliva. The Serie V is the house's flagship line; its year of launch differs between sources (2004 in the former profile, 2006 according to Wikipedia, June 2007 according to Halfwheel).
The family grows Cuban-seed tobacco in Nicaragua, says the house. In July 2016, Oliva Cigar Co. was bought by the Belgian group J. Cortès; in 2021, the trade press describes it as its subsidiary, the family remaining at the head of the company in Miami Lakes (Florida).
In 2023 Oliva opened the Black Swan series. The name belongs to the American retailer CigarPage, not to the house: every edition of the series is entrusted to a different factory and built on a particular lot of tobacco found there. The Oliva edition is rolled in Nicaragua, under a Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper, over an Ecuadorian binder and Nicaraguan filler. Rocky Patel, E.P. Carrillo and Joya de Nicaragua made the three that followed — all three in this atlas.
Oliva also rolls Rustico, for a single line, which the retailer Atlantic Cigar Company, launched in the late 1990s, sells under the name Rustico Habano. In October 2026, only the Reserve line is given there as made by Oliva, in Nicaragua: Ecuadorian Habano wrapper, Nicaraguan binder and filler, hand-rolled longfiller, in Gordo 4 x 60. The Habano line is given there as Dominican, with no factory named.

🥃 Pairings
Buffalo Trace Bourbon
The American bourbon, with its vanilla and toasted-oak notes, is a perfect counterpart to the peppery power of a Serie V Melanio.
Nicaraguan Toña Cerveza
The local beer, light and refreshing, is the most everyday pairing there is in Nicaragua — the end-of-day one, in the growing regions themselves.
👤 Associated figures
Gilberto Oliva Jr.
Son of Gilberto Oliva senior and great-grandson of Melanio, he made the brand's first cigar with his father in 1995. Wikipedia says he is in charge of growing the leaf in Nicaragua and of creating the blends.
