Micallef begins with a breakdown. Al Micallef, a Texas entrepreneur, met the brothers Joel and Edel Gómez Sánchez in a Texas cigar lounge where they had stopped, their car having broken down. He tried what they rolled, and asked them to blend a cigar for him.
Out of that came, in 2016, a house with two heads: the name and the means on one side, three generations of the trade on the other.
For the Gómez Sánchez family comes from Cuba, and its path can be read in this atlas. Pedro F. Gómez rolled at the H. Upmann factory in Havana. His daughter-in-law worked at Partagás. Their grandsons Joel and Edel learned their trade in Cuban factories before running their own, in Estelí — the 1934 factory, where every Micallef is made.
That is also why this entry is Nicaraguan and not Honduran, as it is sometimes filed: Honduras appears only in the filler. Leyenda carries an Ecuadorian Habano wrapper, a Nicaraguan binder, and filler from the Dominican Republic, Honduras and Nicaragua; Reserva Limitada Privada takes a Mexican San Andrés wrapper and reaches as far as Peru for tobacco.
