The Cameroon wrapper is one of the most sought-after leaves in the trade, and Cameroon exists in the cigar world through it alone: a raw material, sold to houses that roll it elsewhere. Meerapfel is no exception.
The Meerapfel family stands at the heart of that history. Tobacco merchants since 1876, of German origin, the Meerapfels built their reputation on the selection and trade of the Cameroon leaf, to the point of becoming its reference name. Richard Meerapfel, who died in 2003, is credited with having saved that tobacco from disappearance at a time when nobody wanted it any more.
When the family launched its own cigar, it did so with the soundest argument there is — nobody knows that wrapper better — but it has it rolled in the Dominican Republic. What Cameroon brings here is therefore the most visible leaf of the blend, and nothing else.
The house accordingly figures among the cigars dressed in the Cameroon wrapper, alongside CAO Cameroon and the others. Cameroon has no premium manufacturing, and the atlas cannot invent one for it.
Range Depth
Meerapfel Cigar
The Cameroon wrapper in the hands of those who have been selecting it since 1876: fine grain, toasted hazelnut, mild pepper, and that silky texture on which its reputation rests. The cigar itself is rolled in the Dominican Republic.
Robusto · Toro
Meerapfel Vintage
Leaves kept several years before rolling. The pepper fades, the hazelnut stays, and the texture becomes finer still.
Corona Gorda
🥃 Pairings
Highland whisky
The malt and the hazelnut of the Cameroon wrapper answer each other almost literally.
Ethiopian coffee
A floral, tart coffee, so as not to crush the delicacy of this wrapper.
