Maya Selva grew up in Honduras, daughter of a French mother and a Honduran father. She left to study in France at sixteen, became an engineer and took a master's degree in the United States.
In 1993 she met Nestor Plasencia — grower and manufacturer — and told him her idea: to bring a fine Honduran cigar to the French market. He became her mentor. She founded her house in 1995 and created Flor de Selva, launched in France before it travelled.
She founded her house in an industry where houses founded by women can be counted.
