Monsoon Cigar Company was born, says the house, from the meeting of Sonny Suciawan and Sebastian on a farm in Brandenburg, Germany; it launched its first brand, Mata Hari, in 2024, first in Germany. The name is that of the Dutch dancer executed in 1917 for espionage; Suciawan says he wants to make Indonesian cigars known on international markets, Germany and the United States included.
Monsoon has no factory of its own and does not name the one that rolls its cigars. Its blends are developed in Jember, in eastern Java, with PT Besuki Raya Cigar — the house behind El Gaucho, a subsidiary of the Mangli Djaya Raya group since 2020 — where Suciawan says he ran tasting and leaf-selection sessions. The catalogue has three vitolas: Courtisane, entirely Indonesian tobacco according to the house; Java Exotica, Dominican and Brazilian tobacco under a Java wrapper whose first harvest dates back to 2020; and the Limited Edition 2024, Brazilian, Dominican and Indonesian tobacco under a Mexican San Andrés wrapper.
The brand was presented in Berlin in June 2024, then in Jakarta and Bandung in November 2024; Suciawan still spoke of it in an interview in February 2025. In September 2026, Cigarworld.de still carried all three vitolas in its catalogue.
