Dion Giolito ran a shop in Nevada and felt that the cigars of his time were all heading in the same direction: stronger, fatter, sweeter. Illusione was born of that disagreement. The brand seeks a profile it readily calls one of an earlier time — dry, woody, spicy, without the sweet roundness that had become the Nicaraguan norm — and finds it in the tobaccos of the Jalapa valley, finer and more nervous than those of Estelí.
The bands of the house are covered in symbols, numbers and esoteric references, and the names of its cigars are often numerals. It is a game, but a game consistent with the point: the brand addresses smokers who read bands, compare formats and argue about blends.
It changed the landscape lastingly on one precise point: it made the small format respectable. At a time when the market was growing in ring gauge, Illusione defended coronas and lanceros, arguing that a slender cigar concentrates a blend instead of diluting it.
Range Depth
Epernay
The creamy side of the house, named after the champagne town. Toasted bread, butter, hay — a midday cigar whose slenderness makes it longer on the palate than its size suggests.
Corona · Robusto
Illusione Original Documents
The slender format the brand defended while the whole market grew fatter. Dry, peppery, uncompromising: the proof that thinness concentrates instead of diluting.
Lancero
Cruzado
2007 — Dion Giolito's second brand, on Aganorsa tobaccos.
Rothchildes
2013 — a single short size, San Andrés wrapper, moderate price.
Fume d'Amour
2015 — vitolas named after Nicaraguan places.
OneOff
An Italian brand of the 2000s, bought by Illusione in 2018 and rolled at Aganorsa.
Garagiste
2019 — the word of small winemakers, for a full-bodied cigar.
🥃 Pairings
Brut champagne
The name is no accident: the bubbles cut the fat and bring the toasted bread back.
Smoked black tea
The green edge of the tea extends the dryness of Jalapa, where a sweet spirit would flatten it.
