Hoyo de Monterrey is a Cuban name — a brand of 1865, born in Vuelta Abajo. After 1960, as with Punch, Montecristo and Romeo y Julieta, the name was taken up outside Cuba, and its non-Cuban version has been made in Honduras ever since. The two cigars have nothing in common but the band.
The Honduran Hoyo even took the opposite tack from the Cuban. Where the Havana of that name is known for its mildness — it is the brand of the Épicure, of light, fine cigars — the Honduran version built its reputation on strength, to the point of becoming one of the references for full-bodied smoking on the American market.
Its Excalibur line, already present in this atlas, is its best-known expression; it was long sold as a brand in its own right, so much so that many smokers do not know it belongs to Hoyo.

The line that outgrew its house: many take it for a brand of its own. Pale wrapper, a more restrained register, and a consistency of manufacture remarkable at these volumes.
