Golden Djawa is a state planter's cigar. PTPN X, the public plantation company that grows in Jember the Besuki Na-Oogst tobacco — the East Javanese leaf the world buys for wrappers —, decided to roll part of its crop rather than sell it all raw: production began in December 2019 and the brand was launched in 2020. Rolling is entrusted to a producers' cooperative, the Koperasi Produsen Kertanegara, which the Indonesian press names among Jember's four factories of national scale.

The cigar is hand-rolled and meant for export, to Europe first; in November 2022 it was presented to the G20 delegations, in Bali, in a village of small enterprises, as an Indonesian premium product able to hold its own against Latin America — the words are the house's, and the entry leaves them to it. It is a way of doing things this atlas has met elsewhere, in Cuba or China: the tobacco belongs to the state, so does the cigar.

Jember rolls for others, and has for a long time: Villiger and Burger Söhne have their factories there, which their entries say. Golden Djawa and BIN are the two houses of the town that have an entry under their own names.
