Nicholas Melillo spent some ten years choosing tobacco for one of the great houses of Estelí before founding his own. That background explains Foundation's positioning: the brand does not present itself as a collector's adventure but as the work of a man who has known the fields, the harvests and the fermentations from the inside.

El Güegüense, his founding blend of 2015, took its name from a popular Nicaraguan play, a colonial satire passed down orally for centuries and inscribed as intangible heritage of humanity. The choice says something about the ambition of the house: to root a cigar in a culture, not merely in a terroir.

Charter Oak, the other line, starts from the opposite end — the Connecticut valley, where Melillo grew up and where the most widely used American wrapper in the trade is grown. A Nicaraguan house laying claim to a northern root: that is rare, and it is deliberate.

In March 2024, Foundation announced that the name El Güegüense was fading away: The Wise Man Corojo takes the place of the first blend, remade, and production moves from Aganorsa Leaf to My Father Cigars S.A., which is run by Pepín García. The name The Wise Man dated from July 2017: it had initially been used for the Maduro variant. In October 2026, the company's website presents The Wise Man Corojo with a Nicaraguan corojo '99 wrapper, in four sizes, from the Corona to the Doble Corona.
