Erik Espinosa had already made two brands known — 601 and Murcielago — under a company he ran with a partner, before taking on alone the name that is his own. He then did what few brand founders do: open his own factory, La Zona, in Estelí, rather than go on having his cigars rolled elsewhere.
That move from brand to maker changes everything. The house now controls its blends from the rolling to the box, produces for itself as much as for other brands, and can afford short runs no subcontractor would accept.
The style is Nicaraguan without detours: full-bodied, peppery, with a frank material that does not chase Cuban finesse. Laranja Reserva, built around a Brazilian wrapper, is its most recognised expression and one of the rare Brazilian successes outside Brazil.
La Zona has meanwhile made a place for itself as a factory in its own right: several boutique brands have their cigars rolled there, which is the best recommendation a workshop can receive.
Range Depth
Laranja Reserva
A Brazilian wrapper over Nicaraguan filler — one of the rare successes of the Bahia leaf outside Brazil. Dried fruit, pepper, an acidity that comes from the wrapper.
Toro
Espinosa Habano
The house style without detours: full-bodied, peppery, frank. Rolled at La Zona, the factory the founder opened to stop depending on others.
Robusto
601
The line born in the EO Brands days, kept by Erik Espinosa after the split from Eddie Ortega.
🥃 Pairings
Aged cachaça
On the Laranja, the pairing follows the wrapper: same country, same acidity.
Dark-roast Nicaraguan coffee
The pepper of the blend can take a frank roast.
