The Cuban brand dates from 1848. Its Honduran namesake is the work of the Villazon family, who had it rolled at Honduras American Tobacco — the HATSA that Frank Llaneza founded in 1963, and whose Cofradía factory was the country's first export-oriented cigar plant.

General Cigar bought Villazon in 1997. The house therefore shares its benches and its rollers with the Honduran Punch and Hoyo de Monterrey, both already in this atlas: Villazon had obtained the American rights to those two in 1965, and Llaneza had moved their production to HATSA in 1969.
