Dunbarton Tobacco & Trust has no factory, and yet its founder once ran one. Steve Saka was president of Drew Estate — which this atlas holds — before leaving to set up his own house, in the summer of 2015.
He has others roll for him: at Joya de Nicaragua, the country's oldest factory and likewise in this atlas, and at NACSA, Nicaragua American Cigars, where Mi Querida comes out under the hand of Raul Disla. It is the Crowned Heads model, with one difference: Saka blends himself, and signs his blends with his own name.
Sobremesa opened the catalogue in 2015. In Spanish the word names the moment when people stay at the table after the meal, while the conversation goes on — and it sets the house's register: medium to full, earth, sweet spice, leather, roasted coffee.
The ranges that followed carry names that explain nothing to anyone who does not already know them, and that is deliberate: Mi Querida, Sin Compromiso, Todos Las Dias, Triqui Traca, Muestra de Saka. The last is a series of trials — literally, Saka's samples.
Range Depth
Sobremesa
The first range, out in 2015. Ecuadorian Habano wrapper, Mexican San Andrés binder, Nicaraguan filler completed with a Pennsylvania ligero — a leaf few houses use.
Robusto · Toro · Corona · Elegante
Mi Querida
A dark Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper over a wholly Nicaraguan core. This is the range rolled at NACSA, under Raul Disla.
Fino Largo · Triqui Traca
Sin Compromiso
Rolled at Joya de Nicaragua. San Andrés Negro wrapper called "Cultivo Tonto", a thin Ecuadorian Habano ligero binder, Nicaraguan fillers from plantations chosen one by one.
Selección No. 5 · Parejo No. 2
Todos Las Dias
The house's Nicaraguan puro — wrapper, binder and filler from the one country — rolled at Joya de Nicaragua. The name states the intent: an everyday cigar, at a strength that is not.
Robusto · Toro
Umbagog
2017 — the broadleaf too rustic for Mi Querida, rolled apart and sold cheaper; named after a New Hampshire lake.
Muestra de Saka
Since 2016 — Steve Saka's trial series, one blend at a time, in small boxes.
