German retailers (noblego.de, smokersplanet.de) say the Tabacalera Darier & Cleef was founded in 1881 by Alfons Darier and Jean van Cleef; smokersplanet.de adds that its production was interrupted several times between 1903 and 1999. The Panamanian press (Newsroom Panama, 2025), for its part, holds Joyas de Panamá, founded in February 1986, to be the country's first permanent cigar factory: the two accounts diverge.
According to noblego.de, the factory rolls entirely by hand, in long filler, a Panamanian tobacco aged three to four years before rolling. The sources consulted name the tobacco province, Chiriquí, but none states the town where the workshop stands.
The range comprises two lines. Colón comes in a Vintage 2001 series, launched on 16 November 2007 and aged a further six months in cabinet after rolling, and an Especiales series; wrapper, binder and filler are entirely Panamanian, according to cigarworld.de. Cruzero de Panamá, whose origin is claimed to be 1881, was relaunched around 2000 under master blender Ramón and complemented in 2010 by large-ring-gauge Sportivos formats, according to noblego.de and cigar-wiki.com.
