Canaritos

Canaritos is the only Canary house in this atlas that rolls on Tenerife. The workshop is at Güímar, on the east coast, a short way from Santa Cruz.

It accepts what the houses of La Palma refuse. Its cigars are shortfillers: the filler is made of pieces of leaf rather than whole folded leaves. And Canary tobacco makes up only about a fifth of the blend — the rest comes from the Dominican Republic.

That point is written here because the label does not say it. "Canary cigar" reads as an origin; it is first of all a place of rolling. The house makes no secret of it, and its price reflects it: it aims at the everyday smoker rather than at the cellar.

That is also what makes it useful in this atlas. Beside El Sitio, which grows its own wrapper under cloth, Canaritos shows the other Canary model — the one that survived the collapse of the plantations by importing its leaf.
