Blanco is a matter of cousins. The family comes from Pinar del Río, Cuba's tobacco province, where it was neighbour to the Plasencias — the two families have known each other for eighty years, the Blancos say, and today it is the Plasencias who roll their cigars, in Estelí. This atlas therefore classifies it in Nicaragua, where leaf becomes cigar; the counter is in Seminole, Florida.
The company dates from 1998. Cesar A. Blanco founded it with his brother Francisco and his son David, picking up what Cesar Sr. had laid down in the early 1900s. David Blanco is the blender: he composes, and the cousins roll, in factories that hold growing and manufacture end to end, in Danlí as in Estelí.
The line that says the house best is called Liga Exclusiva de Familia — the family's exclusive blend. It was the brothers' private reserve before it was sold, and it comes in two versions that are two temperaments: Cesar prefers Connecticut Shade, creamy; David the Pennsylvania Broadleaf Maduro, rougher. Blanco Nine is the other name enthusiasts know.
