Alcazar was born in 1898, its name borrowed from a famous racehorse of the day, says J.C. Newman Cigar Co., the brand's current owner. The puro disappeared during the Great Depression; the house does not give a precise date for the year it bought back the rights, only that it chose to relaunch this old name for a new generation of smokers.

Alcazar is rolled at PENSA — Puros de Estelí, Nicaragua Sociedad Anónima —, J.C. Newman's Nicaraguan factory in Estelí, which employs more than eight hundred people, according to the house. J.C. Newman also sells Cuesta-Rey under its own name, another old brand it has taken over.

The catalogue is limited to one line, Alcazar Maduro, in four numbers from the No. 1 (8 x 52) to the No. 4 (5 x 52): Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper grown in the United States, Nicaraguan filler and binder, medium body, says CigarPlace.biz. As of September 2026, this retailer still sells it, in bundles of twenty, in lots of five or individually.
