There is a fair chance you have already smoked Aganorsa tobacco without knowing it. Eduardo Fernández founded a farming company — Agrícola Ganadera Norteña — before he founded a brand, and that is the reverse of everyone else in the trade. The house is a grower first, in the Jalapa valley and around Estelí, and its leaf turns up in the blends of dozens of houses that have no fields of their own.
That status gives it a place apart in the atlas: it stands for what is rarest in Nicaragua — not one more factory, but the raw material itself. The Cuban seeds replanted here — corojo 99, criollo 98 — have become the reference for the modern Nicaraguan palate, that combination of frank power and sweetness the country imposed against the Havana.
The house long sold its own cigars under the name Casa Fernandez before taking that of its farming company. The change says plainly what it claims: it is not the brand that vouches for the cigar, it is the leaf.
La Tribu belongs to Atlantic Cigar Company, an American retailer: a blog said in August 2013 that it was sold, as far as the blog knew, by that retailer alone, with an Ecuadorian Habano wrapper. In October 2026, the Atlantic Cigar page gives a La Tribu Robusto from the Dominican Republic, and attributes the Serie de Couleurs to Aganorsa Leaf. Its Noir, a Toro 6 x 56 of Nicaraguan tobacco, comes from cigars that stayed a year in Aganorsa Leaf's ageing room, orphaned as a result of what the retailer calls stories of cigar politics.
Range Depth
Aganorsa Leaf Original
One hundred per cent house tobacco, from filler to wrapper. That is the whole argument of the brand: to taste the Jalapa terroir without an intermediary, at full strength.
Robusto
Signature Selection
The same tobacco in a more restrained blend, where the sweetness of the leaf comes ahead of the power. The best way into the style of the house.
Toro
Condega
A brand bought in 2002 with Tropical Tobacco, purchased from Pedro Martín — the name of a town and a terroir between Estelí and Jalapa.
Lunatic
An extension of JFR that appeared in 2015, according to two articles (June 2019, November 2023). In October 2026, the company's website presents Lunatic Torch, with a Corojo wrapper from Aganorsa and a brush foot, strength 3.5 out of 5 according to the company, in Imagine (5 1/2 x 50), Visionaries (6 1/2 x 52), Dreamlands (6 1/2 x 60) and Mad Folk (4 3/4 x 70); the Maduro version, with a San Andrés wrapper, received a 10 x 100 announced before PCA 2023, and the Loco perfectos date from 2019.
JFR
The name abbreviates Just for Retailers; the line has existed since 2011, according to an article of 12 June 2019. In October 2026, the company's website shows two versions on the company's filler: JFR Maduro, with a San Andrés wrapper from Mexico, strength 4 out of 5 according to the company, from the Robusto to the 770 L.E. of 7 x 70, and JFR Connecticut, with a Connecticut wrapper from Ecuador, of which a Junior of 4 1/2 x 46 is presented in April 2024.
🥃 Pairings
Lightly sweetened amber rum
The natural sweetness of corojo needs no help.
70% dark chocolate
The bitterness of the cocoa brings out the green edge of the Jalapa leaf.
