Abdel J. Fernández arrived in Estelí with a family craft and no brand of his own to defend: his grandfather grew tobacco in Cuba, and he began by rolling for other people. That is an unusual position in this trade. For years, well-known brands sold cigars that had come out of his factory without his name appearing on the band — and the trade itself knew.
His reputation as a blender was built on a method rather than a style: Fernández works towards the balance of a blend rather than its strength, and he was among the first to bring Mexican San Andrés wrapper back into Nicaraguan blends on a large scale, at a time when that leaf was considered rustic. The result — dark, sweet, thick in smoke — set a precedent so widely followed that the houses copying it can no longer be counted.
His own brands came later, and late: New World, Bellas Artes, Enclave. They never had to make a name for themselves; they inherited one already made. The house now farms its own fields around Estelí, placing it in the rare category of makers who control the whole chain, from seedling to band.
As of October 2026, Fernández also rolls names that are not his own. Diesel and Man O'War, launched in 2009 for Cigars International, come out of his factories; Diesel moved in 2021 to Forged Cigar Company, and its Uncaged line, in shops since August 2026, is made by Fernández in Estelí. Artesano del Tobacco (also written Artesano del Tabaco) belongs to the brothers Billy and Gus Fakih, who launched Viva La Vida under that name in 2019. Henk belongs to Heiko Poerz, set up with Fernández and Didier Houvenaghel; Nasser Cigars belongs to Jeffrey Nasser, of Pétion-Ville: its The Goat is rolled by Fernández. Reposado: a Fernández blend according to Cigars Direct, which does not say whose name it is.

New World
The blend that made the house known under its own name. Dark Mexican wrapper, thick smoke, notes of burnt coffee and black pepper — powerful without being aggressive, which is precisely the signature of the house.

Bellas Artes
The medium register of the house, drier and woodier. The one to hand to anyone who finds New World too dense, and proof that strength was never the point.

Sosa
The Sosa family's brands — Sosa Classic, Imperio Cubano —, bought in December 2016 and rolled in Nicaragua since January 2017. Until then they came out of Arturo Fuente's factory no. 4, where Juan Sosa has blended since 1997.
San Lotano
Relaunched in summer 2010 according to Wikipedia, under the name, says Fernández, of a brand of his family in Cuba before the revolution. As of October 2022, the brand has four lines — Requiem Habano, Requiem Connecticut, Requiem Maduro and The Bull — which Cuenca Cigars classes from medium-full to full.
